Tihar: sound system rental in Nepal
Nepal's festival of lights, honouring animals and the goddess Laxmi over five days, with door-to-door Deusi-Bhailo singing.
- When: five days in October or November, following Dashain, dates follow the lunar calendar
- Typical audience: 30 to 5,000 guests
- Religious occasion
Tihar follows Dashain and runs for five days, each dedicated to a different honouree: crows, dogs, cows and oxen in turn, before Laxmi Puja on the third evening, when homes are lit with oil lamps and decorated with rangoli to welcome the goddess of wealth, and businesses perform their own Laxmi Puja in shops and offices. The final day, Bhai Tika, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.
From the third evening, groups go door to door performing Deusi and Bhailo, traditional songs and dances accompanied by music, collecting food and small gifts in a custom similar in spirit to carolling, and the whole festival is often described as Nepal's version of Diwali, though its five-day animal-honouring structure is distinctly its own.
