Dashain: sound system rental in Nepal

Nepal's biggest festival, a fifteen-day celebration culminating in the tika and jamara blessing on Vijaya Dashami.

Dashain is Nepal's biggest festival by far, a fifteen-day celebration during which government offices, schools and most businesses close and the Nepali diaspora returns home for the occasion. The festival builds through worship of the goddess Durga to Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day, when elders bless younger family members with tika, a mark of rice, yogurt and vermilion, and jamara, barley shoots grown since the festival began, at a precisely calculated auspicious hour.

Kite flying and traditional swings called ping are set up in towns and villages through the festival, and traditional games bring communities together between the family visits that continue for several days after the main tika ceremony.

Frequently asked questions

Is the whole fifteen days equally busy?
No, the most significant days are the first, seventh through eleventh, and fifteenth; the tenth day, Vijaya Dashami, is the single busiest for family gatherings.
How precise is the auspicious tika time?
Very. A government body calculates the exact hour each year, and families plan their gatherings around it, so timing matters for any event tied to the day.
