Oman's National Day on 18 November marks independence from Portuguese rule in 1650 and the birthday of the country's ruling Sultan, with a military parade, fireworks displays over Muscat and Salalah, and streets, malls and homes decorated in the national colours. Schools across the country prepare their own festive dances and events in the weeks beforehand, and the Royal Opera House and other landmarks are lit for the occasion.
A second public holiday follows on 19 November, giving most of the country a two-day break built around the celebrations.
